The Role of Biokinetics in Living the Good Life

This Fitness Thursday we welcome guest blogger, Lorene Marneweck, a registered biokineticist practicing in Sandton.

Good morning to all the Good Life Dietician blog readers.  I’m a biokineticist and your blog writers have asked to me write a piece for them.  For those of you who don’t know what biokinetics is, we use exercise as a form of therapy to treat all types of conditions ranging from high blood pressure, to muscle and joint injuries, to diseases such as osteoporosis and Parkinson’s disease.  In many cases, our role comes after the physiotherapist; and we help you complete that final stage before reaching your goal– be it fitness, weight loss, returning to sport after an injury or just maintaining a good quality of life.

As our work is very exercise based, and goals are reached through being physically active.  As a result, people tend to stay away! Although a large part of staying healthy is through following a healthy diet, eating the right balance of food groups and drinking lots of water; exercise and physical activity are part of staying healthy as well.  The big misconception comes in when people view exercise as killing yourself for an hour on the treadmill– not true! Exercise can mean stretching, it can mean correcting posture, it can mean preventing high blood pressure and cholesterol, and it can mean fun! There are so many aspects to it, so many different ways of going about and it can be enjoyable!

Biokinetics is not personal training, but it works closely with personal trainers in many instances. Biokinetics is in place to treat a medical condition, reach the goal set and see people fully functional and happy, able to go about their lives with a high quality attached to it.  To do this, we work closely with doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractors, dietitians and personal trainers to ensure the best all-round care.  It can be beneficial for everybody, there are no rules, and that includes those that have never exercised a minute in their life before! It’s never too late to start.

Please contact me should you have queries and questions, and would like more information.  The door is always open and the ear is always listening!
