How healthy are YOU?
This week it is both Nutrition and Obesity week and maybe a good time to evaluate our own nutritional status. Where to begin? Take these 3 easy steps to see if you might need some help to optimize your nutritional status and overall wellbeing
1. BMI
The Body Mass Index or BMI looks at your weight in relation to your height or stature. Calculate your BMI to know if you are underweight, normal or overweight with this simple formula:
Weight(kg)
-------------
Height (m)2
For example, a lady weighing 60kg and is 1.64 m tall, will divide her weight by (1.64)2 and get to an answer of 22.3 kg/m2
What to do with the answer? See where you fit in:
o < 18.5 = Underweight (score 1)
o 18.5-24.9 = Normal (score 4)
o 25-29.9 = Overweight (score 2)
o 30-34.9 = Mildly Obese (score 1)
o 35- 39.9 = Moderately Obese (score 0)
2. WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE
Measuring your waist can give an indication of your risk towards diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Get out that measuring tape see what your measurement is by taking the tape all around your waist at the widest part.
What to do with the answer? See where you fit in:
o < 88cm for Females = Normal (Score 3)
o >88 cm for Females = (Score 0)
o <102 cm for Males = (Score 3)
o >102cm for Males = (Score 0)
3. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
We all know that healthy diet on it’s own cannot ensure optimal wellness. How active are you?
The recommendation for physical activity is:
Exercising for more than 30 minutes MOST days of the week, meaning, at least 4 times per week.
How does your routine look?
No exercise = score 0
Exercising 2 times per week = score 2
Exercising at least 4 times per week = score 3
4. CONCLUDING YOUR STATUS:
