Woolworths virtual store tours for diabetics

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. As part of our continued efforts to educate our readers on living the good life, we bring you the latest brainchild from Woolworths- virtual store tours for diabetics- a fantastic and very creative idea to educate and inform diabetics on healthy food choices.

You or someone close to you is diagnosed with diabetes. Suddenly, the way you look at food changes and your mind is full of questions. What should you eat? What should you avoid? Do you need to buy special food? Plan special meals? The good news is, help is at hand.

As part of our Diabetes Month activities in November, Woolworths is launching an online virtual store tour led by our dietitian, Maryke van Zyl, to help diabetics and their families learn more about making better  food choices.

“We introduced our dietitian-led tours to mark World Diabetes Day last year. They proved so popular that we’re doing them again this year. Places on the store tours are limited, so we’ve produced an online version that anyone can access at any time,” explains Zyda Rylands, Managing Director of Foods at Woolworths. “Health is part of our Good Food Journey and our commitment to offering our customers tasty, healthier choices.”

Both the store tour and the virtual tour also dispel some of the myths around diabetes, such as that diabetics should eat special diabetic food, that diabetics can’t eat any sugar or sugary foods, that there are certain fruits diabetics shouldn’t eat, and that eating too much sugar causes diabetes. Despite the fact that these are widely believed, none of these statements is actually true, says Woolworths dietitian van Zyl.

“In fact, there are few foods diabetics should avoid entirely. The dietary guidelines for people with diabetes are very similar to those recommended for everyone else. The key to nutrition for diabetics is to eat a wide variety of foods and focus on balanced meals,” says Van Zyl, who explains all this and more on the virtual tour.

Store tours will be held at the following Woolworths Stores on Tuesday, 15th November 2011 from 10am to 12pm:
  • Cavendish
  • Tygervalley
  • Westville Pavillion
  • Menlyn
  • Sandton

Bookings for these in store tours can be made with Xandrie Gie at xandriegie@woolworths.co.za . Spaces are limited, so booking is essential.
Otherwise visit the Woolworths website for the online tour.
